BLACK HISTORY MONTH: “NOBODY KNOWS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF BLACK MORMONS”

Mormons.

When people think of Mormons they conjure up images of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, white congregants, polygamy, abstinence from caffeine and alcohol. They have images in their mind of proseletyzing Mormon missonaries who have gone all around the world to spread their faith. They still look upon Mormons as harboring racist practices in their church. In fact, between  1830-1978, blacks could not become leaders in the Mormon church due to the doctrine that blacks “bore the mark of Cain”, apartheid faith that denied blacks full participation based on doctrinal beliefs that whites are “pure” and “delightsome,” while black-skinned people are “unrighteous,” “despised” and “loathsome” descendants of the biblical Cain, who was cursed for killing Abel, and therefore were condemned to being cursed because of their blackness. It was not until 1978, under prophet Spencer W. Kimball, that the Mormon Church admitted blacks into full membership, allowing them to hold the priesthood, marry in the temple and receive the same privileges as other members. Today, black men are allowed to be elders/priests in the Mormon churches. Women on the other hand, are not allowed to become priests in the church. In fact the growth of the Mormon church did not take off until Mormons began to make forays into Africa and Latin America. Until then, the church was overwhelmingly all-white.

So, imagine many people’s surprise when they find out that there is a sizeable number of black people who profess to the Mormon faith. (Twenty per cent of Mormons are black.) Even fewer people know that there were black congregants in the church’s earlier days, that the “vanguard company of Mormon pioneers included three “colored servants” who were baptized Mormons, and whose descendants remained active in the Church for several generations. ”

Even a famous black  rhythm and blues singer, Gladys Knight, of Gladys Knight and the Pips fame, is a Mormon:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/22/AR2006052201639.html

Another thing to be considered is that most black Mormons are former Pentecostal congregants.

There is a film on the history of Black Mormons.

“Nobody Knows; The Untold Story of Black Mormons“, produced by Margaret Young and Darius Gray. The film addresses the history of black Mormons,  their little-known legacy, the effects of the Civil Rights movement and how it was a pivotal force in the church’s releasing its restrictions on the priesthood for blacks. Showing never-before released archival footage, it depicts how life is for modern-day black Mormons.

“Nobody Knows: The Untold Story of Black Mormons”, is sponsored by Independent Feature Productions.

Little Known FACTS About Black Mormons

Black Mormons were among the first to travel to Utah with Brigham Young and the early Mormon pioneers. The man that actually led the Mormons into Salt Lake Valley (at that time a hostile desert) was Green Flake; a slave of a Southerner who converted to the Church. Brigham Young had Flake freed in 1854. Flake died a faithful Mormon. Fort Union, Utah, was originally a Black Mormon community 20 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Green FlakeSamuel D. Chambers (1831-1929) was a Black Mormon from Mississippi who converted to the Church in 1844, and in 1870 he moved to Salt Lake City. He was one of the largest land-owners and wealthiest men in Salt Lake Valley.

Samuel D. Chambers and his wife Amanda (c. 1910)Dan Bankhead Freeman was another early African-American Mormon who worked as a blacksmith in Corinne, Utah:

Dan Bankhead FreemanJane Manning James was one of the most faithful Mormons in Utah. President Joseph F. Smith spoke at her funeral:

Jane and Isaac James
Jane can be seen in the very center of the photo of Mormons at General Conference about the year 1897. Can you find the other black Mormon in this photo?

Mary Ann Perkins was a black Mormon pioneer who settled in Bountiful, Utah:

Mary Ann Perkins (c. 1910)John Brown accompanied Brigham Young on his entrance to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. He was among the first Mormons to enter what is now the state of Utah. In 1848 he travelled back to his home state of Mississippi in order to lead the Mississippi Mormons (both black and white) to the Salt Lake Valley. In the spring of 1848 57 white and 37 black Mormons left Mississippi in 11 wagons. John Brown later said:

“Every man, woman and child, both white and black, gazed at us with astonishment as we passed their habitations.” [i.e. both black and whites in Mississippi couldn’t believe that a black man was leading 11 wagons of almost 100 souls~both black and whites together] (from Black Latter-day Saints Pioneers online)

John Brown: Leader of the Mississippi Mormon immigration to Utah There were only a few hundred Black Mormons in Utah at any given time before the 1960s. Here is a portait of three members of one early Black Mormon family:

Lucinda Flake (sitting) with her two granddaughters (Fort Union, Utah, c.1880s) The First African-American Police Detective

The very FIRST African-American police detective in the United States was Paul Cephas Howell, a black Mormon who moved from the South to Salt Lake City in 1874. Mormon Church President Wilford Woodruff arranged for his employment as a police officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department; a department overwhelmingly Mormon. Officer Howell became a Detective with that department in 1884; the first African-American police detective.

Officer Paul Cephas Howell, Salt Lake City P.D., 1886From Black Panther to Black Mormon

LeRoy Eldridge Cleaver, the Minister of Information in the early Black Panther Party, and the author of the international bestseller Soul on Ice (1968)–once considered the “Manifesto” of Black Nationalists and even white Radicals.

Cleaver was the most well-known American Black Nationalist and Radical in the 1960s. He was the most well-known Black Panther in the 1960s; the Party being a combination of Black Nationalism and Marxism. After fleeing the U.S. to avoid a manslaughter charge (he was with other Panthers in a shootout with Oakland California Police in 1969) he exiled himself to Algeria and later Cuba. He soon became disillusioned with Communism and Socialism when he saw that socialist countries were no “paradises of the workers” as he had been led to believe. He had a “born-again” experience in Cuba, and became a born-again Christian. He returned to the U.S. in 1975 and was given many years of probation (he was not the shooter). Being a famous figure for years, Cleaver was “wined and dined” by prominent Evangelicals and was offered multimillion dollar contracts to start his own Christian television ministry. He declined this, perferring to work (at a low salary) with young black men in a prison ministry. He concern was not becoming wealthy, but to work with young black men in prisons; to convert them to Christ as the way to free them from crime and gangs. By 1982 he had become disillusioned with the commercialism and showmanshipism of Evangelical Christianity, and he started looking into alternative religions. Also in 1982 he met Cleon Skousen, founder of the Freeman Institute (now called the National Center for Constitutional Studies). Cleaver gave talks for the Freeman Institute, and Skousen (a well-known Mormon author and former FBI agent) introduced Cleaver and his wife to the Mormon Faith. In 1984 he was baptized into the LDS Church. He remained a Member of it (although later not always active) until his death in 1998, at age 62, of diabetes.

In 1981 Modibo Diarra, the president of the National Teacher’s Union of Mali, became a Mormon after much prayer and study of various religions and churches. Converting to a “Christian” church in Mali is very dangerous! But Br. Diarra remains faithful.

Modibo Diarra In 1989 Jesse Thomas Jr., a former Baptist preacher, joined the Church, and now serves in local priesthood-leadership positions. He is also starting a Genesis Group in the Denver area.

Jesse Thomas Jr. in front of the Denver Temple In 1990 Elder Helvecio Martins (a prominent Afro-Brazilian business leader) became a Member of the Second Quorum of Seventy; the fifth highest council in the Church.

In 1995 Lee Radcliff, a black Baptist minister who served as a pastor in Chicago and Mississippi for decades, joined the Church. He is only one of many current or former black ministers who join the Church after 1978.

Lee Radcliff Late ’60s and early ’70s R&B singer Gladys Knight became a Mormon in 1998 after her son Jimmy and his family did. Gladys Knight was the singer in the R&B group Gladys Knight and the Pips. Today (2001 A.D.) she writes and performs Mormon Gospel music.

Gladys KnightA number of African-American athletes have become Mormons; including the famous college and NFL football great Burgess Owens, and the NBA All-Star player Thurl Bailey (who now composes Mormon music).

I saw this movie Saturday night here in San Diego. The producers are old friends of mine, and I didn’t want to miss seeing them. The film itself was very well done, thorough and compassionate. Well worth seeing.

THIS IS IN THE MORMONS SCRIPTURES CALLED THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE—>

AFRICANS CURSED BLACK & CURSED FROM THE PRIESTHOOD

“..CURSED..to the Priesthood..being of the(BLACK AFRICAN)lineage by which he could not have the right of PRIESTHOOD(Abraham1:26-27)”

24..from(BLACK AFRICAN)Ham,sprang that race which preserved the CURSE in the land(Abraham1:23-24)

“..the LORD shall CURSE the land..A BLACKNESS came upon all the(BLACK AFRICANS)..of Canaan, that they were despised among all people..(Moses7:8)”

“..seed of Cain were BLACK,and had not place among them..(Moses7:22)”

THIS IS IN THE BOOK OF MORMON—>

THE MORMON GOD CURSING PEOPLE WITH DARK BLACK SKIN AS A CURSE The point is the SKIN COLOR IS DARK BLACK & it’s A CURSE now go up to a BLACK OR DARK SKIN INDIAN MANS FACE & SAY THIS

“…cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing…the Lord God did cause a skin of BLACKNESS to come upon them (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 5:21)”

“And the skins..were DARK,according to the MARK which was set upon their fathers..which WAS A CURSE upon them…(Book of Mormon,Alma 3:6)”

“and the CURSING which hath come upon their skins…(Book of Mormon, Jacob 3:5)”

THIS IS MORMON PROPHETS BACKING UP WHAT I AM SHOWING YOU ON THESE LDS MORMON SCRIPTURES

LDS MORMON PROPHET Brigham Young: “WHY are so many of the inhabitants of the earth CURSED with a SKIN of BLACKNESS ? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the holy Priesthood, AND THE LAWS OF GOD.(Journal of Discourses 11:272 & The Way to Perfection Pg.107)

“…the Lord God did cause a SKIN of BLACKNESS to come upon them (Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 5:21)”

“..A BLACKNESS came upon all the (BLACK AFRICANS)..of Canaan..(PEARL OF GREAT PRICE Moses7:8)”

“being of the (BLACK AFRICAN)lineage by which he could not have the right of PRIESTHOOD,(PEARL OF GREAT PRICE Abraham1:26-27)”

MORMON PROPHET Brigham Young said the Africans are the SEED of CAIN!

LDS MORMON PROPHET Brigham Young In a sermon given on March 8, 1863, Young stated:

“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the AFRICAN RACE? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of CAIN, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so” (Journal of Discourses, 10:110).

…Canaan, the son of Ham…hence the NEGRO or AFRICAN RACE…
    (LDS MORMON APOSTLE Orson Hyde,
    Nauvoo.April 27th,1845,printed in Liverpool, page 30)

“…The negro is damned…till God chooses to remove the curse of HAM”(LDS MORMON Prophet Brigham Young,New York Herald,May 4, 1855)

24..from(BLACK AFRICAN)Ham,sprang that race which preserved the CURSE in the land(pearl of great price Abraham1:23-24)

“…the LORD shall CURSE the land..A BLACKNESS came upon all the(BLACK AFRICANS)…of Canaan…(pearl of great price Moses7:8)”

LDS MORMON APOSTLE MARK E. PETERSON SAID LAMANITES & NEGROES HAVE THE SAME CURSE OF BLACK SKIN

“Who placed the Negroes originally in darkest Africa? Was it some man, or was it God? And when He placed them there, He segregated them….The Lord segregated the people … At least in the cases of the LAMANITES and the NEGROES we have the definite word of the Lord Himself that He placed a dark skin upon them as a CURSE … Race Problems–As They Affect The Church
    by Mark E. Petersen 1954: Page 14

Key words are WHITE and DELIGHTSOME which means the SKIN!

“…wherefore, as they WERE WHITE…and DELIGHTSOME, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a SKIN OF BLACKNESS to come upon them (2 Nephi 5:21).”

LDS PROPHET Spencer W. Kimball said: I saw a striking contrast in the progress of the Indian people today…they are now becoming WHITE and DELIGHTSOME, as they were promised…General Conference Report, October, 1960. Improvement Era,December 1960, pp. 922-923

LDS PROPHET Joseph Fielding Smith:”Ham, through Egyptus, continued the curse which was placed upon the seed of Cain. Because of that curse this dark race was separated and isolated from all the rest of Adam’s posterity before the flood, and since that time the same condition has continued, and they have been ‘despised among all people.’ This doctrine did not originate with President Brigham Young but was taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith …. we all know it is due to his teachings that the negro today is barred from the Priesthood.” The Way to Perfection, pages 110-111.

    THIS IS LDS DOCTRINE!

LDS PROPHET JOHN TAYLOR:”…after the flood we are told that the curse that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham’s wife,as he had married a wife of that seed. And why did it pass through the flood? Because it was necessary that the DEVIL should have a representation a upon a the earth…”Journal of Discourses, Volume 22, page 304.

24…from Ham,sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land.(The Pearl of Great Price the Book of Abraham 1:23-24)

THIS IS NOT OPINIONS THIS IS LDS DOCTRINE

The introduction to the 1981(LDS) The Book of Mormon states,”The Lamanites are the principal ancestors of the American Indians.”

    LDS MORMON PROPHET Joseph Smith:
“…The Lamanites, through transgression, became a loathsome, ignorant and filthy people, and were CURSED with a SKIN of DARKNESS yet, they have the promise,if they will believe, and work righteousness…they shall become a WHITE and DELIGHTSOME people…”
    :The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star,vol.14, p. 418 ”

“…they WERE WHITE…and DELIGHTSOME…Lord God did cause a SKIN OF BLACKNESS to come upon them (2 Nephi 5:21).”

THIS IS NOT OPINIONS THIS IS A LDS MORMON PROPHET SPEAKING ABOUT HOW HE KNOWS THE SEED OF CAIN CANT HAVE THE PRIESTHOOD BY QUOTING HIS MORMON SCRIPTURES!

…LDS President David O McKay in 1961 about the basis for the policy of restricting blacks from priesthood”he replied that it rested solely on The Book of Abraham That is the only reason,he said It is founded on that “(“David O.McKay and Blacks,”)

“being of the lineage by which he could not have the right of PRIESTHOOD,(Abraham 1:26-27)”

THIS IS NOT OPINIONS THIS IS A LDS MORMON PROPHET SPEAKING ABOUT HOW HE KNOWS THE SEED OF CAIN ARE BLACK BY QUOTING HIS SCRIPTURES!

President Joseph Fielding Smith wrote,”It was well understood by the early elders of the Church that the mark which was placed on Cain and which his posterity inherited was the black skin. The Book of Moses informs us that Cain and his descendants were black” (The Way to Perfection,p.107).

“…for the seed of Cain were BLACK…(Pearl of Great Price Moses 7:22)”

AND JUST TO ADD IN A MORMON APOSTLE TALKING ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE TO THE WHITE MISSIONARYS

LDS Mormon General Authority Alvin R. Dyer

“…you may have often heard missionaries say it or have asked the question: Why is a Negro a Negro?…The reason that spirits are born into Negro bodies is because those spirits rejected the Priesthood of God in the pre-existence. This is the reason why you have Negroes upon the earth.

(“For What Purpose?,” a talk given by Alvin R. Dyer at the Missionary Conference in Oslo, Norway, March 18, 1961, printed in The Negro in Mormon Theology, pp. 48-58)

“…I want to talk to you a little bit now about something that is not missionary work, and what I say is NOT to be given to your investigators by any matter of means…. Why is it that you are white and not colored?…and not born a Chinese or a Hindu, or a Negro? Is God such an unjust person that He would make you white and free and make a Negro CURSED under the CURSING OF CAIN that he sould not hold the Priesthood…
( Alvin R. Dyer at the Missionary Conference in Oslo,Norway, March 18, 1961)

THEN A LDS CHURCH PAPER TALKING ABOUT BLACK SKIN IS BAD AND WHITE SKIN IS GOOD

“…A BLACK SKIN IS A MARK OF THE CURSE OF HEAVEN… Some, however, will argue that a black skin is not a curse…In fact, some have been so foolish as to believe and say that a black skin is a blessing, and that the negro is the finest type of a perfect man that exists on the earth; but to us such teachings are foolishness. We understand that when God made man in his own image and pronounced him very good, that he made him white…”
(LDS MORMON Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 3, page 157)

AND A MORMON PROPHET SAYING CAIN IS CURSED WITH BLACK SKIN

LDS MORMON PROPHET JOSEPH F. SMITH “Not only was Cain called upon to suffer, but because of his wickedness he became the father of an inferior race. A curse placed upon him and that curse has been continued through his lineage and must do so while time endures.Millions of souls have come into this world cursed with a black skin and have been denied the privilege of Priesthood and the fullness of the blessings of the Gospel. These are the descendants of Cain…” The Way to Perfection, pages 101-102.

THIS IS MORMON DOCTRINE THAT BLACK AFRICAN MEN THE SEED OF CAIN CAN NOT HOLD THE PRIESTHOOD IT IS FROM YOUR MORMON GOD!

1947 the First Presidency (supreme council) of the Church issued an Official Statement:

“From the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith even until now, it has been the doctrine of the Church, never questioned by Church leaders, that the Negroes are not entitled to the full blessings of the Gospel.” (Statement of The First Presidency on the Negro Question, July 17 1947, quoted in Mormonism and the Negro, pp.46-7)

In 1949, The First Presidency issued the following statement:

“The attitude of the Church with reference to Negroes remains as it has always stood. It is not a matter of the declaration of a policy but of direct commandment from the Lord, on which is founded the doctrine of the Church from the days of its organization, to the effect that Negroes may become members of the Church but that they are not entitled to the priesthood at the present time.” (The First Presidency on the Negro Question, 17 Aug. 1949)

THIS IS MORMON DOCTRINE THAT BLACK AFRICAN MEN THE SEED OF CAIN CAN COME DOWN TO EARTH AS NEGROES AND THAT HANDICAP KEEPS THEM FROM HOLDING THE PRIESTHOOD

Official Statement of First Presidency issued on August 17, 1951, reads:

“The position of the Church regarding the Negro may be understood when another doctrine of the church is kept in mind, namely, that the conduct of spirits in the pre-mortal existence has some determining effect upon the conditions and circumstances under which these spirits take on mortality, and that while the details of this principle have not been made known, the principle itself indicates that the coming to this earth and taking on mortality is a privilege that is given to those who maintained their first estate; and that the worth of the privilege is so great that spirits are willing to come to earth and take on bodies no matter what the handicap may be as to the kind of bodies they are to secure; and that among the handicaps, failure of the right to enjoy in mortality the blessings of the priesthood is a handicap which spirits are willing to assume in order that they might come to earth. Under this principle there is no injustice whatsoever involved in this deprivation as to the holding of the priesthood by the Negroes…..

“Man will be punished for his own sins and not for Adam’s transgression. If this is carried further, it would imply that the Negro is punished or allotted to a certain position on this earth, not because of Cain’s transgression, but came to earth through the loins of Cain because of his failure to achieve other stature in the spirit world.”

THIS IS A MORMON PROPHET VERIFYING THE MORMON DOCTRINE THAT BLACKS DID SOMETHING WRONG IN THE pre-mortal existence and were PUNISHED FROM THE PRIESTHOOD

    JOSEPH F. SMITH
“There is a reason why one man is born black and with other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantage. The reason is that we once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient, more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful received less…. There were no neutrals in the war in heaven. All took sides either with Christ or with Satan. Every man had his agency there, and men receive rewards here based upon their actions there, just as they will receive rewards hereafter for deeds done in the body. The Negro, evidently, is receiving the reward he merits.” Doctrines of Salvation, Volume 1, pages 66-67.

“That negro race, for instance, have been placed under restrictions because of their attitude in the world of spirits, few will doubt. It cannot be looked upon as just that they should be deprived of the power of the Priesthood without it being a punishment for some act, or acts, performed before they were born.” The Way to Perfection, page 43.

Wow…..all of that racist doggeral just to prove a lie.

God did not curse Blacks, anymore than He has not cursed Whites, Native Americans, Latinos, etc.

Only self-hating racists created the lie of Blacks being cursed.

To say that God cursed what He created is to blaspheme against what He has put down here on His Earth.

For if Blacks are cursed, who have never done any depraved wrongs against Whites, then what does that make of Whites, who have historically committed the most sick, savage, and perverted wrongs against Blacks?

      Can you answer me that?

As for the so-called “Mormon God”.

There is no Mormon, Catholic, Protestant or *religion* god.

There is only one God, and all will have to face His wrath for their blaspheming against any and all of His creations.

Paul Cephas Howell was not a Mormon. However, his son Abner did join the church.

“Paul Cephas Howell was not a Mormon. However, his son Abner did join the church.”

Could you please provide a link that verifies your statement?

      Thanks.

      • I asked Margaret Young, one of the authors of the Untold Story. I also do not see Paul in the New Family Search regarding LDS baptism.

      • Ann

        Thanks for your reply.

Could you please provide a link to the “New Family Search” concerning Paul in regards to LDS baptisim.

  7. Not really. Not being baptized means there is not a record to show. You can go to http://www.familysearch.org and see if you find anything on him in the IGI.

    • Ann

I ask because you stated that Paul Cephas was not a Mormon.

The site I used (after searching the Internet for reliable sources on Black Mormons), Angelfire, stated the following:

      The First African-American Police Detective

“The very FIRST African-American police detective in the United States was Paul Cephas Howell, a black Mormon who moved from the South to Salt Lake City in 1874. Mormon Church President Wilford Woodruff arranged for his employment as a police officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department; a department overwhelmingly Mormon. Officer Howell became a Detective with that department in 1884; the first African-American police detective.”

      SOURCE LINK: http://www.angelfire.com/mo2/blackmormon/blackmormons.html

That is why I questioned your comment about Cephas.

But, you did not provide direct links on whether or not Cephas was or was not a Mormon.

That there have been Black Mormons was the main gist of my post.

The link may or may not indicate whether or not he was a Mormon————but, I did ask that you provide information on his authenticity as a Mormon.

I consider the history of Black Mormons not only fascinating, but, also very unknown to many people.

      Anyway, thanks for stopping by.

  8. Blacks Ridiculed again by the Mormon Church
By Lee B. Baker, Former Mormon High Priest and Bishop
    18 November 2013
    ____________________________________________________________________________

For several years now, every Tuesday evening I have had the great privilege of hosting “Teaching The Truth”, an LDS focused broadcast to the Christian and Mormon listeners of Worship FM 101.7 in Monrovia, the capital City of Liberia, West Africa.

I have come to know several of the station managers and a number of the more frequent callers to this weekly program. Through their comments, questions and photographs, I have been genuinely moved to see the application of their unyielding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Over the past few months the question of racist teachings in the Book of Mormon and from the past Leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been on the minds of the Black Liberian converts to Mormonism and the many African Christians who struggle to understand how such a Church can be growing in Africa.

I believe the answer is relatively simple; it has been the perfect merging of a sincere lack of knowledge on the part of the Black Mormon Converts and a disturbing lack of accountability on the part of the White Mormon Leaders. A near total lack of knowledge across Africa specific to the more explicitly racist teachings found within the current Mormon Scriptures, principally that of Black Skin and even less information concerning the racism and bigotry openly and officially taught by the early Leadership of the Mormon Church. These facts, combined with the current Church Leadership’s inability to clearly and specifically reject its own racist teachings both in print and from its past Senior Leadership (liberally using the terms Nigger, Darky, Sambo and Skin of Blackness ), has left the Black Race with only a short irresponsible and offensively juvenile Official Statement that claims the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knows very little about its own race-based policy, which lasted for well over 100 years:

“It is not known precisely why, how or when this restriction began in the Church, but it has ended.” – Official Mormon Press Release concerning Race and the Church

Maintaining a detailed and comprehensive history of every aspect and teaching of the Church has been both one of the hallmarks and one of the downfalls of Mormon Church. Within the relatively young Church, authoritative documentation, however corrupt it may have been, has never been in short supply. Each of the Senior Leaders of the Mormon Church has had several official biographers as well as an army of Church approved historians to record all aspects of the History of the Church. In fact, one of my first of many “Callings” in the Mormon Church was that of a Ward (Congregational) Historian, long before I became a Mormon High Priest and Bishop.

The peculiar assertion that the Mormon Church itself does not know the details of its very own race-based policy of restricting the Blacks from holding the Priesthood is tremendously embarrassing for all Mormons and exceptionally degrading for anyone who actually believes it.

As a former local leader of the Mormon Church, I have repeatedly assured the African members of the Mormon Church that the documents and “Scriptures” I have read to them over the air are both Authorized and Official for the time period they are relevant to. I clearly state the current position of total acceptance of all Races by the Church, but I must highlight the fact that the Book of Mormon still carries it’s obviously racist message that dark skin was a curse from God. I have said many times on-air that like the Mormon Missionaries, I too believe that every African should have a copy of the Book of Mormon, if only to learn the truly racist teaching of the Mormons, directly from the Book of Mormon.

I have and will continue to teach the African Nations from the authentic Mormon Scriptures and the official Church History documents, which I had been provided by the Mormon Church to execute my responsibilities as a Mormon Bishop. The Official Records of the Mormon Church include many jokes and sermons given within the Official Semi-Annual General Conference of the Mormons, using freely the terms Nigger, Darky and Sambo. Additionally, these LDS Church documents record nearly 100 graphic sermons and lessons that clearly teach the principle, practice and policy that Black Skin was, is and will remain forever the Curse of Cain.

Only in the recent past has the “Complete History” of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints come to the attention of its own membership, much less to the under developed regions of the world. As this information is discovered, an ever increasing number of members of the Mormon Church have come into a personal crisis of faith, most notably Elder Hans Mattsson of Sweden, a General Authority of the Mormon Church who has gone public with his doubts and questions concerning the appalling treatment of the Black Race by the Mormon Church.

Not unique to Africa, has been the Mormon Church’s training of young Missionaries to strictly avoid any discussion of several of the more embarrassing, yet true, teachings of the 183 year old Church. Among the prohibited subjects to discuss have been, becoming a God, the practice of Polygamy and religious racial restrictions on the Black Race.

With the smooth talent of a skilled politician, the Mormon Church has ended its Official Racial Restrictions with the following hypocritical and deceitful, but technically accurate Statement:

“The origins of priesthood availability are not entirely clear. Some explanations with respect to this matter were made in the absence of direct revelation and references to these explanations are sometimes cited in publications. These previous personal statements do not represent Church doctrine.”

As a former Mormon Bishop and member of the Mormon Church for over 32 years, let me be of some help with the translation of this very carefully crafted, yet deceitful message. The two key and noteworthy phrases are: “in the absence of direct revelation” and “These previous personal statements do not represent Church doctrine.”

I will address the most obvious first, clearly the “previous statements” from the Church and its Leadership “do not” represent the Church doctrine today. The policy was reversed in 1978 and there is no question as to the current policy of today. The hypocritical deception is that between 1830 and 1978 those “statements” did, very much “DID” not “DO” represent past Official and Legitimate Mormon Church doctrine. Yet, I do give full credit to the clever Mormon authors and editors of today for their most skillful use of the English language.

And finally, the most revealing and enlightening statement from the Mormon Church is: “in the absence of direct revelation”. So then, it is incredibly true and accurate that without any mockery or sarcasm to state that; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had for nearly 140 years, restricted a significant portion of the human race, millions and millions from what they teach is God’s intended blessings of Eternal Marriage, Salvation and even Godhood, without knowing why they did it, all without “direct revelation”?

This Official Statement of religious shame and embarrassment comes from the Headquarters of a Church that claims to be guided in all things by “direct revelation”. How then, did such an exclusive doctrine based on prejudice, bigotry and racism become so widely accepted, so authoritative, so convincing and so commanding for so long, without any “direct revelation”?

As a former Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I give solemn testimony that what they have declared is true, in that, they were and are now racist and do not hide the History of the Mormon Church from its members or the public, this, their Official Statement on Race and their Official “Scriptures ” clearly demonstrates that fact.

I believe that the truly wicked teachings as well as the repulsive history of the Mormon Church concerning Polygamy, Polyandry-(sharing wives among the men), Blood Atonement, as well as restricting the Blacks from the Mormon Priesthood is available for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.

It is my prayer that all Mormons and non-Mormons alike will come to know the true history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I wish that every adult around the world could find the time to read the calculated racism and bigotry found within the Book of Mormon5. My hope is that all mankind could discover the contemporary Mormon Teachings, to see the deception they hold, and then… to read the True Word of God and follow the True Jesus Christ found only in the Bible.

    Sincerely,

    Lee B. Baker
Former Mormon High Priest and Bishop
