CIRCUS AFRICANUS: “THE REDEMPTION OF HAM”, OR, A BRAZILIAN FAMILY

Ham’s Redemption or ‘A Redenção de Cam by Spanish artist Modesto Brocos,  circa 1895. Redenção de Cam [The Redemption of Ham], 1895. Oil on canvas, 199 × 166 cm. Rio de Janeiro: Museu Nacional de Belas Artes. Photo: © Coleção Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.

The painting is of a Brazilian family consisting of a Black grandmother,  mixed mother and White child, and a Portuguese father, with each generation becoming “whiter”. The painting represents the Brazilian ideology of ’embranquecimento’ or whitening of the black genetic line, and it depicts the Black grandmother thanking God for making her grandchild white.
