SPLC complaint: Louisiana traffic court penalizes Latinos with unconstitutional fees
We’ve just filed a civil rights complaint against a Louisiana traffic court for discriminating against Latinos who don’t speak fluent English. In addition to paying traffic fines and court costs, some were sentenced to mandatory, overpriced English classes where they were mocked and humiliated. They were also forced to pay for inadequate interpreters. The courts have been repeatedly told that they must provide interpretation services free of charge.
