Everyone by now has heard the taped conversation of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s racist attacks on black people.   Taped on April 25th 2014, the recording of him talking to his girlfriend, Vanessa Stiviano (aka Maria Perez) was leaked to TMZ, and eventually blew up on the Internet. Here are excerpts from the conversation:

Insulting his Clipper team:

Stiviano: Do you know that you have a whole team that’s black, that plays for you?

Sterling: You just, do I know? I support them and given them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them? Do I know that I have – Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?

Raging at Stiviano for posing with Black celebrities:

Sterling: Yeah, it bothers me a lot that you want to promo- broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?

Stiviano: You associate with black people.

Sterling: I’m not you, and you’re not me. You’re supposed to be a delicate white or a delicate Latina girl.

Stiviano: I’m a mixed girl. And you’re in love with me. And I’m black and Mexican. Whether you like it or not.

Denying his racism and calling her “a mental case”:

Stiviano: Isn’t it wrong? Wasn’t it wrong then? With the Holocaust? And you’re Jewish, you understand discrimination.

Sterling: You’re a mental case, you’re really a mental case. The Holocaust, we’re comparing with –

Stiviano: Racism! Discrimination.

Sterling: There’s no racism here. If you don’t want to be… walking… into a basketball game with a certain… person, is that racism?

Telling her it is okay to degrade blacks, and that it is okay to go along to get along in the racist status quo:

Sterling: It’s the world! You go to Israel, the blacks are just treated like dogs.

Stiviano: So do you have to treat them like that too?

Sterling: The white Jews, there’s white Jews and black Jews, do you understand?

Stiviano: And are the black Jews less than the white Jews?

Sterling: A 100%, 50, a 100%.

Stiviano: And is that right?

Sterling: It isn’t a question – we don’t evaluate what’s right and wrong, we live in a society. We live in a culture. We have to live within that culture.

Sterling’s comments were racist. And sexist. He owns a basketball team that consists of Black players, yet he has a racist and paternalistic view of them. Just because he is a Jew in no way lets him off the hook for his racism.

Sterling as a hypocrite has a non-white woman on the side, who happens to be Latino/Black mixture. This scenario of a racist laying up with a non-white woman is nothing new:  Strom Thurman; White men who raped, shacked-up with Black women during segregation, then ran out the next day to head a lynch mob against a Black man who committed reckless eyeballing of a White woman. Racism outbursts such as Sterling’s are old news.

Sterling is  an adulterer who has a mistress, even though he is a married man.

I consider that an infamy against the institution of marriage.

So, Mr. Sterling, you have three strikes against you:

Strike one! Sexist racist.

Strike two! Hypocrite.

Strike three! Adulterer.

You’re out of the game!

Oops. Okay, that’s baseball, but, he still strikes out in many ways as a human being against his fellow humans.

As for Ms. Stiviano/Perez, she will not be let off the hook either.

She was knowingly involved with a racist, 80-year-old man and she knew he was married.

Kinda hard to feel sad for this woman who will probably make tons of money off taping her private conversation with a man whose racism is nothing new in America. Just like Sterling, she will be just fine:  television interviews; book deals; Movie-of-the-Week; reality TV shows—the list can go on and on.

As for her racial makeup of Black and Latina, it will not be the first time that a woman of color has shown self-hatred by getting into bed with a racist White man.
