1945 The Legendary Delta Rhythm Boys teamed up with the “First Lady of Jazz”‘ Ella Fitzgerald, on “It’s Only A Paper Moon,” which entered the R&B hit parade and eventually reached #4 and #9 pop. The song was originally titled “If You Believe In Me,” which was a line in the chorus.
1951 The Five Keys had their chart debut with “The Glory Of Love,” which reached #1 for four weeks. One of the best of the ’50s vocal groups, the Keys charted seven times through 1956. “Glory” was their biggest hit. Though it reportedly sold at least half a million copies, a mint condition original label 45 today is worth more than $1,000.
1968 The Drifters and Bill Haley & the Comets performed at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom.
1973 The Pointer Sisters charted with “Yes You Can Can,” reaching #12 R&B and #11 pop with their debut Top 1100 disc. The four sisters began as studio singers for the likes of San Francisco stars Dave Mason, Elvin Bishop, and Boz Scaggs.
1990 Micheal Jackson, well-known for his love of children, invited 130 from the YMCA to visit his Neverland Ranch, spending the day at his video arcade, theater, and zoo.
1992 El DeBarge and Chaka Khan performed at New York’s Beacon Theater. Two months earlier Chaka had become a grandmother at age thirty-nine.
