NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK – APRIL 19-25, 2009: ‘CELEBRATING PEOPLE IN ACTION’

The Points of Light Institute kicks off National Volunteer Week 2009 “Celebrating People in Action,” which presents an opportunity for individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and government entities alike to celebrate the ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service.

The theme for National Volunteer Week, commemorated April 19-25, is “Celebrating People in Action.” The theme captures the meaning behind this signature week – honoring the individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities: those who give unselfishly to make this world just a little better place in which to live.

This week remember the wonderful volunteers whose dedicated efforts help to make life just a little easier for so many people.

As a woman who has done various types of volunteer work (at a neighborhood community center, as a docent at the zoo, as a teacher of English to adults who could not read and write), I am very proud of the work I have done as a volunteer.

Not only has my volunteering given enrichment to the lives I have touched, it has also given me much joy. Those whom volunteers help are not the only ones who benefit from such endeavors—-those of us who volunteer our time receive benefits as well—benefits that last us a lifetime.
