#1 R&B Song 1943:   “Apollo Jump,” Lucky Millinder & His Orchestra

1954   The Flamingos’ collectible, “Plan For Love” ($2,000) and the Clovers’ “Little Mama” ($50) were released.

 

1956   Detroit’s Riviera Theater hosted a show featuring Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, the Five Keys, and the Jewels.

 

1960   Jimi Hendrix (originally named Johnny Allen Hendrix by his mother), a member of a local Seattle band called the Rocking Kings, performed at his first documented show at Washington Hall.

 

1991   B.B.King won the Best Traditional Blues recording trophy for Live at San Quentin and MC Hammer won Best R&B Song and Best Rap Solo Performance awards at the thirty-third annual Grammy Awards ceremonies at New York’s Radio City Music Hall for “U Can’t Touch This.” Upon hearing of the nomination from his publisher, sampled writer Rick James refused to go to the ceremonies, saying, “Every time I’m nominated for somethin’ I lose. Why don’t you go in my place?” Jay Warner did and Rick won.

1991   Chaka Khan and Ray Charles won best R&B Performance by a  Duo or Group with Vocal at the thirty-third annual Grammy Awards. The song was “I’ll Be Good To You,” and it was Charles’ eleventh Grammy. Luther Vandross earned best R&B Vocal Performance, Male honors.

 

1992   Jodeci peaked at #18 pop and #1 R&B with their debut album, Forever My Lady. All three of the doo-wop/R&B/new jack swing group’s albums would reach #1 R&B over the next four years.

 

1999   Lenny Kravitzs “Fly Away” reached #1 in England thanks to its placement in a Peugeot car commercial that ran extensively throughout the British Isles.
