1952 Roy Milton charted with “So Tired,” reaching #6 R&B. The title pretty much summed up Milton’s feelings, since he charted nineteen times in the Top 10 while never having a #1. He had three #2s including his biggest hit, the aptly titled “R.M. [Roy Milton] Blues” in 1946.
1954 The Clovers opened at Emerson’s in Philadelphia.
1961 Chuck Berry opened his own amusement park outside of St. Louis called Berry Park.
1970 Wilson Pickett charted with “Born to be Wild,” a cover of the Steppenwolf hit from the previous year. It was Wilson’s twenty-fifth R&B hit. Wilson once stated: “I imagine there’s all kinds of screams that guys are doin’ [that] are off-key. Like James [Brown], he’ll scream between the notes. He screams, but nobody ever knows what key he’s in. But I scream on key.”
1991 Diana Ross performed at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, on the first night of her world tour. It was an encouraging start as she broke the house attendance record previously held by John Denver.
1995 Luther Vandross performed at the Summer Pops Bowl Amphitheater in San Diego, CA.
