#1 R&B Song 1960:   “Doggin’ Around,” Jackie Wilson

1953   Collector’s favourites “You Are My Only Love,” by the Cardinals ($400), and the incredibly rare “These Foolish Things,” by the Five Keys ($4,000), were released.

 

1060   James Brown’s remake of the “5″ Royales’ “Think” (and his first UK release) charted, going on to #7 (#33 pop). At this point in his career, Brown’s label began issuing a single of his every two or three months for the next ten years. It was meant to satisfy the legion of fans who packed his seemingly nonstop performances. No wonder he was nicknamed “the hardest-working man in show business.”

 

 

1964   Dionne Warwick made her debut in England appearing on BBC-TV’s Top of the Pops.

 

1977   At the Mohammed Ali Invitational Track Meet at Cerritos College in Cerritos, CA, Marvin Gaye outpaced Tony Orlando and the host, Ali, in the race.

 

1990   B.B. King was honored at the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s twenty-first annual induction dinner with a Lifetime Achievement Award, while Smokey Robinson was inducted by Whitney Houston at the Hilton Hotel in New York.

 

1992   MichaelJackson granted his first interview in six years when he told Ebony magazine:  “I haven’t scratched the surface yet of what my real purpose is for being here.”

 

1992   Bell Biv DeVoe charted en route to #1 R&B with “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” their third #1 in two years. Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross also contributed vocals to the hit, which was from the film Mo’ Money.

 

1996   One of England’s most revered female vocalists, Joan Armatrading was honored at the forty-first Ivor Novello Awards with the Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection award in London.
