An Intergenerational Dialogue on the Future of Hip Hop

and the Black Freedom Struggle

One of the hottest Working Sessions/Workshop at SOBWC will address the historical role of Black art and culture in the Black Freedom Struggle and the current state of hip hop and rap music in this context. Some people believe the corporate music industry has hijacked hip hop and created forms, e.g., gangsta rap, which are highly detrimental to the sustenance of the Black community in the U.S. and the Black World.

Hip Hop founders/pioneers/ leaders Grandmaster Mele Mel, Kool Moe Dee, LA Sunshine, and DJ Cool Clyde, along with founders/practition ers of the Black Arts and Culture Movement Haki Madhubuti, Sonia Sanchez, Jaribu Hill and Askia Muhammad Toure are issuing a call for all righteous new generation hip hop and rap artists and cultural workers to join them in New Orleans at SOBWC. Their mission is to launch a campaign to reclaim hip hop and revive the Black Arts and Cultural Movement to uplift and liberate our people!
